The Ngongotaha ( non go taha ) or  “Ngongy” is a world famous trout fishery for both Rainbows and Browns. The spring fed creek meanders through Paradise Valley until it spills into Lake Rotoroa.

A unlikely series of natural phenomena has enabled the Ngongotaha to have one of the highest concentrations of 10lb+ or “trophy” sized trout on the planet.

First it is one of the few spawning grounds for the fish of Lake Rotoroa and the adjacent lakes such as Rotoiti. The lakes waters are fertile and enable the trout populations to grow large, quickly. With few places to spawn, the streams that feed the lake are often choked with fish.

Second, Lake Rotoroa is very shallow, meaning that summer temperatures force trout to seek shelter in the cooler, well oxygenated waters of the Ngongotaha.

The Ngongotaha is less than 100 meters from the lodge.

The fishing season begins December 1st, and ends June 30th.
